KERR MILL IN ROWAN COUNTY

KERR MILL AT SLOAN PARK

Located in the Millbridge community of Rowan County, the Kerr Mill dates to the 1820's.  It was constructed by Dr. Samuel Kerr.  It is currently a part of the Sloan Park, operated by Rowan County Recreation Department.

A wooden foot bridge crosses Kerr Creek and connects the park with the historic mill site.

James and Carrie Sloan were the last owners of the mill and it was through their efforts that the park was created and the mill preserved.
While originally powered by the water wheel, the mill was converted to a roller mill in 1887.  The current water wheel is non operational and the mill race is not connected to a water source.

The park features many picnic shelters and a large play ground.  There are also three miles of trails.  It is a great place for a picnic and when the mill is open I am sure it is a nice living historical museum.
The blue afternoon sky provided a nice backdrop for this photograph taken by my Faithful Hiking Companion.  Sloan Park is located ten miles west of Statesville just off the Mooresville Road (NC 150).  The park is a 100 acre hidden gem in the rolling piedmont foothills.  The address is 550 Sloan Road Mt Ulla N.C.
